An abnormality at any point in this process may lead to sterility. Numerous schemes for mechanisms controlled by nuclear (genic male sterility) have been devised to identify the timing and location of the inception of sterility. Structural sterility may be divided into abnormal changes occurring in the male cells or surrounding anther tissues during microsporogenesis. Naturally occurring genic male sterility systems have been successful in recurrent selection schemes but, with the exception of rice, have had limited success of producing large quantities of hybrid seed for commercialization. |
