ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile: Cruliviridae 2023. Journal of General Virology. 104:12. 2023. https://doi.org/10.1099/jgv.0.001930. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1099/jgv.0.001930 Interpretive Summary: Discovery and characterization of new virus species require regular additions and revisions to virus taxonomy to keep pace with the science. Six new families have been created in the order Bunyavirales to accommodate these novel viruses. This article presents a timely update on the family Cruliviridae, whose member viruses have recently been found in crustaceans, for virologists in research and regulatory environments. Technical Abstract: Cruliviridae is a family of negative-sense RNA viruses with genomes of 10.8–11.5 kb that have been found in crustaceans. The genomes of crulivirids consist of three segments with three to four open reading frames encoding nucleoproteins, glycoproteins, large proteins containing an RNA-directed RNA polymerase domain, or zinc-finger proteins of unknown function. This article presents an updated taxonomy of the order Bunyavirales as now accepted by the ICTV. |
