Interpretive Summary: Discovery and characterization of new virus species require regular additions and revisions to virus taxonomy to keep pace with the science. Six new families have been created in the order Bunyavirales to accommodate these novel viruses. This article presents a timely update on the family Leishbuviridae, whose member viruses have recently been found in protists, for virologists in research and regulatory environments.

Technical Abstract: Leishbuviridae is a family of negative-sense RNA viruses with genomes of ~8.0 kb that have been found in protists. The genomes of leishbuvirids consist of three segments with three open reading frames encoding nucleoproteins, glycoproteins, and large proteins containing an RNA-directed RNA polymerase domain. This article presents an updated taxonomy of the order Bunyavirales as now accepted by the ICTV.
