Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The rotary-knife roller gin stand has been wholly adopted in the United States since its development in the late 1950s and early 1960s while the reciprocating-knife roller gin is more widely used in other parts of the world. There are published data showing that roller gin stands preserve fiber quality better than saw gin stands and evidence suggests that reciprocating-knife and rotary-knife roller gin stands produce similar quality cotton fiber. However, no results have been published from controlled research studies comparing the two types of roller gin stands equipped with the cotton fabric and rubber roller covering material typically used in the U.S. and tested with U.S. cottons. This presentation will summarize results from recent tests conducted at the USDA-ARS Southwestern Cotton Ginning Research Laboratory comparing saw ginning, rotary-knife roller ginning, and reciprocating-knife roller ginning of Pima and Upland cottons.
