Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum (FOV) is an important fungal pathogen that continues to threaten cotton production in the San Joaquin Valley (SJV) of California, especially FOV race 4 (FOV4). In surveys conducted from 2017 to 2021 in the SJV, most isolates collected were FOV4, however the genetic diversity we have identified across samples within and among FOV races seems to be expanding when compared to earlier surveys. Isolates that group with FOV3, based on sequencing of translation elongation factor (EF1-a) were found to be more diverse than FOV3 isolates previously reported from the SJV. Additionally, an unknown FOV was identified that did not group with any of the known FOV races or Australian biotypes of FOV. Interestingly, this unknown FOV shares a common SIX effector with FOV4 isolates. However, based on a preliminary root dip inoculation assay this unknown FOV was less aggressive when compared to isolates of FOV4 T, N, and MT genotypes. |
