Technical Abstract: Phytoplasmas, Candidatus Phytoplasma spp., are a distinct group of wall-less bacterial plant parasites. Phytoplasma-associated diseases have been reported from many crop species, including palms. There have been two diseases of palms reported from the United States that appear to be caused by phytoplasmas: Lethal Yellow and Lethal Bronzing Disease. This extension article summarizes causation, symptomology, localization, and possible threat to the California/Arizona date industry.
