Interpretive Summary: This work summarized the past accomplishments and on-going activities of the authors’ research on valorization of cottonseed biomass products and byproducts. The presented data of chemical composition and physicochemical properties demonstrated that cottonseed biomass products and byproducts could serve as valuable and sustainable raw materials for green chemistry applications. Solid data have shown the practical examples of nonfood applications of the cottonseed biomass as bio-based wood adhesives for bonding non-structural interior plywood which meet the relevant European Union and American Standards. Biocomposites of PLA with cottonseed meal and oil not only reduce the cost of the expensive PLA material, but improve the strengths of these biocomposites. Research results demonstrated that glandless cottonseed can be used to make popular plant-based butter products. Those butter products are not only rich in human nutrients and energy, but also may have certain healthy benefits as potential bioactive compounds were detected in these cottonseed extracts. Results and knowledge derived from the advanced spectroscopic analysis of these cottonseed raw materials and formulated products in this work provided further insight on designing, selecting, and optimizing relevant processing procedures for valorization of the cottonseed biomass materials.

Technical Abstract: This work reviews the relevant accomplishments and on-going activities of the authors’ research on valorization of cottonseed biomass products and byproducts. It covers three subtopics on 1) Basic knowledge on the chemistry and composition (nutrient information and mineral contents) of cottonseed and other cotton biomass byproducts; 2) Applied research on application development of value-added food (peanut-butter like products)) and nonfood products (bio-based wood adhesives and biocomposites); and 3) Advanced studies of C bondings and interactive mechanisms during processing and product formulation by cutting-edge spectroscopic techniques including ATR FT-IR and C-13 NMR spectroscopy.
