Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Cottonseed is classified as either glanded or glandless according to the presence or absence of pigmented gossypol glands in the seed. The cotton industry produces approximately 50 million metric tons of cottonseed world-wide annually. Cottonseed is a sustainable resource but sells as a relatively low-value industrial product at approximately $300/ton. However, cottonseed contains many bioactive compounds including gossypol, gallic acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, bioactive peptides, flavonol glycosides, and quercetin. For example, highly-purified gossypol is sold at $26/mg, similar to the widely-used anti-cancer compound Taxol at $28.6/mg. Therefore, cottonseed value may be increased by serving as a source of bioactive compounds with health promotion and disease prevention potentials. This preceding paper reviews the potential of increasing cottonseed value through cottonseed bioactive materials for nutrition and health. |
