Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In the U.S., healthy dietary patterns are defined by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA). This presentation explores current knowledge gaps and flexibility of healthy dietary patterns as they are described in the 2020 DGA through a discussion of 1) nutritionally adequate vegetarian eating patterns for different life stages, 2) the role of ultra-processed foods in healthy dietary patterns, and 3) Indigenous dietary patterns comprised of foods native to the Great Northern Plains. Topics that may impact the development of future recommendations for healthy dietary patterns will also be discussed, especially emerging research on dietary cost, home food preservation, and preparation time.
