Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Irrigation uses a lot of water from both surface water and groundwater, profoundly affecting hydrologic fluxes in agricultural watersheds. Consequently, it is crucial to accurately represent the irrigation component in watershed hydrologic modeling to support conservation-focused agricultural management practices and climate change adaptation planning. The main objective of this study was to develop and incorporate a novel irrigation algorithm routine into the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model to establish SWAT-IRG, with the aim of improving SWAT’s irrigation simulation for various irrigation systems. This enhancement introduces two new irrigation options each with four irrigation systems (surface, sprinkler, center-pivot, and drip). We will provide a brief discussion of SWAT-IRG development with corresponding components. We will also present an example application of SWAT-IRG at the Fort Cobb Reservoir Experimental Watershed in central Oklahoma to show the use of SWAT-IRG.
