Interpretive Summary: Soil degradation or soil deterioration, which leads to the loss of oil productivity, is one of the major problems facing the human society, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Soil degradation leads to the loss of ecosystem services, such as the decline in productivity. Accurately understanding the processes of soil degradation and developing technologies to mitigate soil degradation in arid and semi-arid regions are very important for rehabilitating degraded lands, improving ecosystem well-being, and promoting the healthy development of human society. This special collection in the Frontiers in Environmental Science is aimed at elucidating the mechanisms and processes of soil degradation and exploring remediation measures for degraded lands in arid and semi-arid regions. The special collection consists of eight research articles with three focused on soil degradation and five on remediation of degraded soils. This special collection will be useful to ecologists and environmental conservationists for understanding soil degradation and for rehabilitating degraded lands using remediation techniques. Technical Abstract: Soil degradation is one of the huge challenges facing the human society, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Soil degradation leads to the loss of ecosystem functions, such as the decline in productivity and soil health. Accurately understanding the process and mechanism of soil degradation in arid and semi-arid regions and developing technologies to curb soil degradation are of great significance for scientifically responding to land degradation, restoring and improving degraded lands, enhancing ecosystem well-being, and promoting the healthy development of human society. This special issue in the Frontiers in Environmental Science is aimed at elucidating the mechanisms and processes of soil degradation as well as remediation of degraded lands in arid and semi-arid regions. It contains 8 research articles: 3 in soil degradation and 5 in degraded soil remediation. This special collection will be a useful reference to ecologists and environmental conservationists in understanding soil degradation and applying remediation techniques to degraded lands. USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
