Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: USDA-ARS has been working to develop new and/or enhance design guidance, engineering tools, software, and best management practice standards to monitor and assess the performance of dams and hydraulic structures as erosion control measures. One way to accomplish this is to ensure that hydraulic jacking is not a possible outcome of spillway operation. During a one-day workshop on hydraulic jacking, a group of scientists and engineers will present recent findings of a multiple year study that helps practitioners calculate the possible amount of hydraulic jacking that can occur at offsets and cracks in spillway faces. "USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer."
