Over the last five years, Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV; Order Bunyavirales, Family Tospoviridae) has emerged as a primary concern for the industry, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses. While INSV resistant lettuce cultivars remain largely unavailable, chemical control tactics to manage the thrips vector, Frankliniella occidentalis have been ineffective in preventing disease outbreaks. Here, we will discuss ongoing coordinated research efforts that aim to improve the management of the thrips and INSV in the Salinas Valley of California. |
