Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: There is a long history in rural communities of incorporating land stewardship values into local farming practices. However, pressures on farmers to consider the off-site impacts of their operations have increased in complexity. These concerns have broadened to include regional and even global impacts on soil, water, and air quality. The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the USDA supports research to help farmers maintain high productivity while minimizing environmental impacts. The aim of this article is to highlight the capabilities of the USDA-ARS Soil & Water Management Research Unit (SWMRU) located in St. Paul, Minnesota, and to describe how research at the SWMRU can support farmers.
