Interpretive Summary: Mastitis is caused by a bacterial infection of the mammary tissue. Most previous research on mastitis in livestock has focused on dairy animals, but the disease is also common in meat animal species. This popular press article describes genetic strategies for improving udder health, including potential negative impacts of excessive milk production. Data from ongoing experiments conducted by the author are summarized.
