Technical Abstract: Heavy exercise, especially of the eccentric type, initiates an acute phase response that contributes to the breakdown and clearance of overloaded tissue. Following the exercise, the mobilization and activation of neutrophils appear to contribute to increased myocellular enzyme efflux. The acute phase reactions are unified by a common set of cytokine mediators including IL-1=DF, IL-6, and TNF which in turn influence some of their target tissues via induction of eicosanoids like PGE2. Importantly, these events are all modulated by peroxide tone and antioxidant defense status. The ability to intervene in this process through nutritional means suggests new approaches to determining the fundamental role of the acute phase response in exercise. This information can then be exploited for use in physical training regimens and in the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases.
