Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Seeds of several lesquerella and related species were tested for seed surface gum content. The test is based on the phenol- sulfuric acid method for analysis of carbohydrates, but values were corrected for sugars and oligosaccharides <10,000 molecular weight. Crude seed surface gums content ranged from 12 to 27% among the lesquerella species, but the corrected measure of polysaccharide gums ranged from 2.4 to 13.5%. The response of polysaccharides and gums of various structures to the phenol-sulfuric acid reagent indicates that the phenol-sulfuric acid method must be calibrated with a purified gum isolate for accurate gum content determinations.
