FB1 is a polyhydroxy-amino compound similar to sphingolipids, and it has been shown to be a tumor promoter. FB1 was compared to tumor promoters such as tetradecanoylphorbolacetate (TPA) and others that activate ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and protein kinase C (PKC). FB1 was also compared with tumor promoters by flow cytometric analysis of Raji cells. By contrast with TPA, FB1 neither activates PKC and ODC nor has any effect on Raji cells. These results suggest that FB1 does not promote tumors in the same way as TPA. However, FB1 induced adenoma and adenocarcinoma on the mouse lung after exposure to sub-initiation amounts of diethylnitrosamine (DEN). |
