Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Several insect cell lines derived from Heliothis zea were successfully cultured and were found to display different morphological features. While some grew horizontally into smooth flat sheets, others grew in a more or less vertical fashion thus forming numerous clumps. Infectivity tests conducted using Heliothis zea single nuclear polyhedrosis virus (HzSNPV) showed all the cell lines to be susceptible. A comparison was made to assess the ability of each cell line to replicate HzSNPV by determining the tissue infection dose fifty (TCID-50/ml) of the extracellular virus (ECV). This was found to vary among the different cell lines. Similarly, the number of occlusion bodies (OB) produced by each cell line was also found to be different.
