CE systems are available with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and diode array (DAD) detectors that extend the range of compounds that can be analyzed by this technique. Capillary zone electrophoresis with diode array detection (CZE-DAD) and micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography with diode array detection (MECC-DAD) have been explored for quantitation of aflatoxins. Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2 were separated from one another within 15 minutes using MECC-DAD. The limit of detection of the method, 15 pg aflatoxin B1 in 30 nL buffer, was poor due to the reliance upon the absorption at 362 nm. Sensitivity of the MECC methods for aflatoxins would likely be improved considerably by using LIF detection. The use of LIF for the analysis of another group of mycotoxins, the fumonisins, has been demonstrated. Fluorescein isothiocyanate derivatives of fumonisin B1 (FB1) were detected at levels as low as 0.025 pg. The method has been applied to the analysis of FB1 in corn over the range of 0.25 to 5.0 ug/g. |
