Interpretive Summary: Sheep especially like to eat a particular forb called Scarlet globemallow. This plant is native to the western United States. This low growing plant has attractive rust-red flowers that bloom all summer. It has a spreading growth habit and will be useful in permanent plantings along highways and in perennial gardens. Ten gram seed lots are available from USDA in accordance with Pre-Variety Germplasm Certification Standards.

Technical Abstract: Scarlet globemallow (Sphaeralcea coccinea [Pursh] Rydb.) is an important rangeland dietary component of small mammals, pronghorn, sheep, and cattle. Sheep utilized this selection more than other native Sphaeralcea tested in the spring and fall grazing period near Kimberly, Idaho. This selection has a low growth habit, attractive foliage and flower colors, drought and heat tolerance, and a spreading growth habit. It will be of benefit for permanent plantings along highways and in perennial gardens. Ten gram seed lots are available from USDA in accordance with Pre- Variety Germplasm Certification Standards.
