The first question is whether the genetic-map order of genes and of molecular markers in the short arm of chromosome 9 of corn is confirmed by the exact criterion of the physical order of deletions; the data confirm that the order measured by both means is the same. The second question is whether the molecular size and the DNA in end portions of a newly broken chromosome can be distinguished from unbroken ends; the data are explicitly clear in showing distinguishable end segments after breakage, and they further identify an end marker for the normal end portion of the chromosome map. The value of this specific information is basic, but the generalizable implications strengthen confidence in map development for the many applied purposes for which mapping is used. |
