Technical Abstract: Estimating daily evapotranspiration rates is useful for water management purposes in semi-arid regions. This is particularly true when management involves green manures or partial summer fallow replacement crops. Evapotranspiration from a precision weighing lysimeter with a crop of black lentils (Lens culinaris Medikus, cv. 'Indianhead') were compared to Bowen-ratio and Penman-Monteith estimates for 1993 and 1994. In addition, evapotranspiration rates were partitioned into soil evaporation and plant transpiration by comparing measurements of a precision weighing lysimeter with bare soil located in the same field. Daily estimates of evapotranspiration from Bowen-ratio and Penman-Monteith were consistently lower when compared with lysimeter measurements for 1993 but compared reasonably well during 1994. Cumulative daily totals from Bowen-ratio measurements and the Penman-Monteith model compared well with lysimeter data showing that these methods could be effectively used for monitoring water use during fallow periods.
