Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: We have produced oat-maize partial hybrids by pollinating oat (Avena sativa L.; 2n=42) flowers with maize (Zea mays L.; 2n=20). Maize RFLP markers were used to identify the maize chromosomes present in these plants. Oat- maize partial hybrids with maize chromosomes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 present as additions to a complete complement of oat chromosomes were identified. No hybrids with maize chromosomes 1 and 10 were observed. Self-fertility observed in oat haploids due to a meiotic restitution process was also observed in some partial oat-maize hybrids with one or two maize chromosomes. Self-pollination of partial hybrids resulted in the production of eleven fertile oat-maize addition lines containing individually maize chromosomes 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9 plus one line with both maize chromosomes 4 and 7. These novel cytogenetic stocks represent useful materials for gene/marker mapping, gene expression, and gene transfer studies.
