Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The process of saltation is treated as a problem of nonlinear dynamics. The equations of motion for a particle moving by saltation in a two dimensional system are solved numerically. Characteristics of the particle motion are related to the fluid motion through the shear velocity. Increasing the shear velocity while holding other parameters fixed shows that the particle experiences a very regular motion, bifurcation to regula but periodic motion, very irregular motion, and a return to regular motion. The results suggest that it is reasonable for some investigators to see saltation as movement by regular jumps along the bottom, whereas others see saltation mainly as rolling with occasional jumps.
