Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The effects of mineral nutrition on animal immunity and stress response have been studied extensively over the past several years. The value of much of this research and the applicability of the results to the "real world" are often questionable. It seems that inadequate or excessive intakes of several minerals can have marked effects on individual components of the immune system and on animal health and performance. However, the effects of supplying minerals in excess of NRC (1984) recommendations on the health and performance of feeder calves subjected to the stresses of marketing and transport is still not clear. Some "apparent" mineral deficiencies in stressed calves can not be corrected by feeding increased amounts of the mineral in question.
