Technical Abstract: The application or augmentation of preparations of biocontrol agents to suppress diseases caused by soilborne plant pathogens generally, and species of Rhizoctonia specifically, has received considerable attention during the past 18 years with regard to field or horticultural greenhouse applications. However, due to the space constraints imposed on this manuscript, certain limitations were placed upon papers cited in this brie review. Consequently, it was decided only to include information which has been published within the past 10 years and which is concerned only with field investigations. This chapter is divided into the following sections: introduction, application of formulations prepared with biocontrol agent biomass, use of bulk formulations and infested grains, treatment of seeds and soils with fungal spores and bacterial cells, use of novel biocontrol agents, and conclusions. Most of the biocontrol field work is devoted to the species Rhizoctonia solani and the damping off diseases it causes on worldwide crops of economic importance. Field research activities are increasing as formulation technology results in the improvement of newer products. Research is being done in countries of all continents except South America. This review is relevant because it updates the recently achieved experimentations to control diseases caused by R. solani with formulated products.
