Interpretive Summary: The purpose of this research was to determine the location of a gene which affects stalk strength, rindless culm (rlc). A mutation in this gene causes alterations in stem structure resulting in increased breakage and lodging. Special maize lines containing a gene which causes waxy seed type were used in crosses to plants carrying the rlc gene in order to produce populations which were used to determine the location of rlc. The data suggest that the rindless culm gene is located on the short arm of chromosome 10. Further analysis to identify a more precise location is planned.

Technical Abstract: In order to identify the location of the rindless culm (rlc) gene derived from a Korean local maize, Dangjin, a homozygous rlc line was crossed with 10 waxy-marked translocation sets. Ten sets of F1 plants were selfed to produce F2 seeds. F2 kernels were separated into waxy and normal seed, and planted different rows. Plants with the rlc gene were counted in each row after tasseling. From Chi-square analysis, the rlc gene was found to be very closely linked with T9-10b (P < 0.005) which has a breakage point of 0.4 on short arm of chromosome 10. Morphological characteristics were observed in F2 populations such as zigzag type, multi-tillers and ears, and lower-node-eared plants.
