Interpretive Summary: Bovine butyrophilin was assigned to chromosome 23 using a panel of somatic hybrid cell lines. These cell lines are produced by fusing a mouse or hamster cell with a bovine cell. These cells randomly reject different foreign (bovine) chromosomes, producing a collection of rodent cells that have different bovine chromosomes in them. The collection was characterized using markers whose chromosomal locations were already known by different means. By comparing the patterns produced by the bovine butyrophilin gene with the patterns produced by the previously characterized genes, we determined that the most likely placement of the gene was on chromosome 23.

Technical Abstract: Chromosomal assignment of bovine butyrophilin (BTN) was performed by analysis of DNA from somatic hybrid cell lines using the polymerase chain reaction. The gene was assigned to bovine chromosome 23 using two sets of primers specific for bovine BTN.
