Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: An experiment was conducted with 140 male Pekin ducklings to evaluate the effects of moniliformin (M) in Fusarium fujikuroi M-1214 culture material (MCM) on ducklings. Day-old ducklings were randomly allotted to dietary treatments containing 0, .24, .48, .72, .96, 1.2, and 1.44% MCM. These levels of MCM supplied 0, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, and 150 mg M/kg of feed. Diets were formulated to be isocaloric, isonitrogenous, and met or exceeded the requirements of growing ducklings. Each dietary treatment was fed to 4 pen replicates of 5 ducklings per pen for 17 days. Ducklings fed more than 100 mg M/kg had lower (P<0.5) feed intakes than controls. Decreased body weight gains (P<.05) were observed in ducklings fed more than 100 mg M/kg. In contrast, feed conversions were not significantly different for the ducklings fed any of the treatments. Ducklings fed more than 75 mg M/kg had increased (P<.05) relative heart weights. Increased relative kidney weights (P<.05) were observed at more than 100 mg M/kg. Compared with controls, no significant differences in serum glucose, albumin, cholesterol, total protein, globulin, aspartate aminotransferase, and gamma glutamyl transferase levels were observed in ducklings. The only gross lesion noted was a generalized cardiomegaly observed in ducklings fed more than 75 mg M/kg diet. Results indicate that Fusarium fujikuroi culture material containing M, at levels that supplied more than 75 mg M/kg diet, is toxic to ducklings.
