Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This letter to the editor provides a reminder of a recommendation by the Food and Nutrition Board that supplementation with pre-formed vitamin A should generally be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects, and the adequate to high content of vitamin A from foods in diets of U.S. women. This recommendation by the Food and Nutrition Board is in contrast to other recommendations cited in a recent editorial, suggesting that up to 8000 IU of supplemental vitamin A is acceptable.
