Interpretive Summary: An introduction to the SSSAJ Special Publication reference book resulting from the 1995 ASA-CSSA-SSA Bouyoucos Conference entitled "Applications of GIS to the Modeling of Non-Point Source Pollutants in the Vadose Zone" is presented. The preface provides background into the importance of assessing non-point source (NPS) pollutants and into the modeling of NPS pollutants with the use of geographic information systems along with the justificatio for the conference, an overview of the conference presentations and a brief epilogue. The preface provides an orientation which establishes the interconnection between the 20 chapters which comprise the textbook.

Technical Abstract: Because of their ubiquitous nature and potential chronic health effects, non-point source (NPS) pollutants have become a ocal point of attention worldwide, particularly with regards to the pollution of surface and subsurface sources of drinking water. The ability to model NPS polutants provides an assessment tool for optimizing the utility of the environment by sustaining its use with minimal detrimental consequences while preserving its esthetic qualities to serve man's spiritual needs. This preface provides a brief introduction and general discussion of the papers presented at the 1995 ASA-CSSA-SSSA Bouyoucos Conference entitled "Applications of GIS to the Modeling of Non-Point Source Pollutants in the Vadose Zone.
