Interpretive Summary: Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) germplasm lines, N220-1-91, N222-1-91, N320-2- 91, and N419-1-91, were developed and released cooperatively by the USDA- ARS and Texas Agricultural Experiment Station because of their resistance to either or both the reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) and root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita), along with good productivity. Both nematode species are yield-limiting constraints to cotton production in the southern United States. In fumigated and reniform nematode-infested plots, yield reduction of N220-1-91, N222-1-91, N320-2-91, and N419-1-91 were 15, 18, 3, and 12%, respectively, compared to a reduction of 44% for Stoneville 453 and 23% for La RN 1032, a reniform and root-knot nematode resistant check. Laboratory studies indicated that compared to Stoneville 453, N222-1-91, N320-2-91, and N419-1-91 were more resistant to reniform nematodes; whereas, N220-1-91, N222-1-91, and N320-2-91 were more resistant tto the southern root-knot nematode, race 3.

Technical Abstract: The reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) and root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) are major, yield limiting pests to cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) production in much of the cottonbelt of the United States. In 1995, germplasm lines, N220-1-91, N222-1-91, N320-2-91, and N419-1-91, were developed and released cooperatively by the USDA-ARS and Texas Agricultural Experiment Station because of their resistance to eithe or both the reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) and the southern root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita, race 3), along with high yield potential. Studies conducted from 1992-1994 in fumigated and reniform nematode-infested plots, indicated that yield reduction of N220-1-91, N222- 1-91, N320-2-91 and N419-1-91 were 15, 18, 3, and 12%, respectively, compared to a reduction of 44% for Stoneville 453, a susceptible check, and 23% for La RN 1032, a reniform and root-knot nematode resistant check. Laboratory studies with artificial nematode inoculations indicated that compared to Stoneville 453, the germplasm lines, N222-1-91, N320-2-91, and N419-1-91, were more resistant to reniform nematodes; whereas, N220-1-91, N222-1-91, and N320-2-91, were more resistant to the southern root-knot nematode, race 3. These lines produced yields that were equal to or greater than Stoneville 453 in the fumigated plots and greater than Stoneville 453 in the reniform nematode-infested plots.
