Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The western corn rootworm is among the most important insect pests in the United States, yet no lines of corn have been previously identified which have antibiosis resistance to corn rootworm larvae. We have been conducting field, greenhouse, and laboratory screening of exotic corn and maize relatives in an effort to identify germplasm resistant (antibiosis/nonpreference) to this major pest. We have identified a number of potential sources of resistant germplasm as indicated by root damage in the field. Most of this germplasm has also been evaluated in greenhouse experiments as well as laboratory behavioral bioassays involving host-plant recognition by neonate larvae. Results from the field trials, greenhouse data, and bioassay data will be discussed.
