Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The protocols for recovery and purification of an enzyme from fermentation broth depend strongly on the broth characteristics and nature of the enzyme protein. In most cases, a variety of state of the art separation methods such as membrane filtration, precipitation, ion-exchange, gel filtration, hydrophobic interaction, and substrate affinity separations are used in steps to purify an enzyme protein to homogeneity. Recent advances in the process integration and development of novel methods of enzyme purification will be discussed. Our work dealing with the downstream processing and purification of a number of industrial enzymes such as beta-amylase, glucoamylase, pullulanase, glucose isomerase, esterase and beta-glucosidase from fermentation broth will be described.
