Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The pedicel, basal maternal region, of the maize kernel acts as a conduit for the transfer of carbon and nitrogen compounds from the vegetative portions of the plant into the developing seed. Within the pedicel, incoming sucrose is hydrolyzed to fructose and glucose and the incoming amino acid pool is modified in such a way as to conform to the needs of the developing endosperm for storage protein synthesis. Glutamine synthetase activity is relatively high within the pedicel, reaching its apex during the most active period of storage protein deposition. Previously we have established, by biochemical and serological means, the identity of a unique isoform of maize glutamine synthetase in the pedicel of developing kernels. Here we report the isolation of several putative glutamine synthetase clones from a cDNA library prepared using pedicels harvested 15 days after pollination. A characterization of the clones will be presented.
