Technical Abstract: Diseases are a constant threat to the livestock industries in regard to the production of wholesome and affordable meat and meat products. Among the most economically important are infectious diseases that affect reproductive performance. Most of these are caused by viruses that have the ability to cross the so-called placental barrier to infect and affect the conceptus with a variety of sequelae including embryonic death and resorption, fetal death and mummification, developmental anomalies, stillbirth, and the birth of weak and unthrifty progeny. The purpose of this presentation is to briefly review and discuss (1) the viruses associated with reproductive diseases of livestock, (2) the mechanisms by which such viruses cause reproductive disease, and (3) the means by which virus-induced reproductive diseases are diagnosed and prevented.
