Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The bovine retroviruses, bovine leukemia virus, bovine lentivirus (bovine immunodeficiency-like virus) and bovine spumavirus (bovine syncytial virus) integrate a copy of their genome into the host cell during their replicative phase and thus are uniquely equipped to establish persistent, and often lifelong, infections which may include variable periods of latency and are protected form host immune surveillance. The absence of acute illness, the lengthy and slow progression to clinical disease and the absence of specific clinical signs have made it particularly difficult to identify etiological relationships and emphasize the importance of careful clinical evaluations and epidemiological investigations in these studies.
