Interpretive Summary: Annual cool season grasses were first used as forage for wild and domesticated grazing livestock, but were eventually used to provide grain for human use. This chapter describes how different species of annual cool season grasses have adapted to different climates. It also outlines the uses of annual cool season grasses for grain and forage production, tillering dynamics, limits of production and production management. The uses of annual cool season grasses as hay and silage are discussed as well as animal performance of diets of annual cool season grasses. The effects of animal utilization on the plant growth and regrowth are discussed.
