Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Marek's disease virus (MDV) genes encoding the two subunits of the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase (RR) were cloned and their nucleotide (nt) sequences determined. The large subunit (RR1) is 822 amino acids (aa) with a molecular weight of 92,800 daltons. The MDV herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) RR1 protein lacks the N-terminal protein kinase domain of HSV-1 RR1, as do equine herpes virus (EHV) RR1 and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) RR1. MDV RR1 has amino acid identities of 46%, 50%, and 53% with the RR1 proteins of HSV-1, EHV-1, and VZV, respectively. The small subunit (RR2) is 343 aa with a molecular weight of 39,100 daltons. The MDV RR2 protein exhibits amino acid identities of 58%, 63%, and 62% with the RR2 proteins of HSV-1, EHV-1, and VZV, respectively. RR2 also contains a consesus nonapeptide, YSGSVSNDL at C-terminus which may inhibit the reductase activity of the enzyme.
