Technical Abstract: The straight drop spillway is a rectangular overfall weir with a hydraulic jump type stilling basin generally used as a grade control structure in waterways, but also may be used as an erosion control structure in gullies, as an irrigation drop and check structure, or as a spillway for earthen dams. The size and hydraulic capacity of these structures have grown tremendously in recent years and they are currently being used in situations not intended when the original tests were conducted. Large structures have been designed without concern regarding their performance. The increased size and scale made it essential that research be conducted to determine the effect of the increased scale and to determine the size and shape of the naturally developed scour for the proper sizing and placement of riprap upstream and downstream of the spillway. The USDA, Agricultural Research Service conducted studies to provide this information.
