Interpretive Summary: Cheilosia flower flies are being used for the biological control of weeds, such as Carduus thistles. To ensure that the names of these agriculturally important flies are properly and consistently applied to one species, the original specimens on which the names were based were re- examined. This information is of importance to organizations and individuals dealing with the control of weeds, such as economic entomologists and biological control specialists.

Technical Abstract: The names of 10 species of Cheilosia Meigen, 1822 described by Camillo Rondani and some of their synonyms are revised. Twelve new synonyms are proposed. Lectotypes are designated where necessary. Three old synonyms, Cheilosia aerea Dufour, 1848; Cheilosia laticornis Rondani, 1857 and Cheilosia lasiopa Kowarz. 2885 are reinstated as valid.
