Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Localized Compaction and Doming (LCD) is proposed as a way to alter water flow paths around a knife injected nitrogen fertilizer band. Reduced water movement through the fertilizer band is expected to decrease solute movement and leaching. Small plot lysimeters (2.22 m**2) were used to evaluate leaching losses of anionic tracers applied under four management types: 1) broadcast; 2) spray irrigated; 3) conventional knife injection; and 4) Localized Compaction and Doming. The plots received both simulated and natural rainfall. Tile flow concentrations indicate that some preferential flow occurred in all treatments, but cumulative chemical leaching was lowest for the LCD treatment.
