Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Vegetative filter strips have been proposed to reduce the environmental impact of agriculture by reducing sediment, pesticide, and nutrient loading of surface runoff. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of filter strips on a Houston Black clay soil. Runoff was measured for 4 yrs on 1 ha watersheds at Temple, TX with and without filter strips every 30 m. Runoff was limited to only a few storms each year, with less runoff occurring on the watersheds with filter strips. Rainfall simulator trials were conducted to determine the water infiltration rates for tilled soil and grass filter strip areas.
