Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The HYDRUS-2D model, based on Richards equation and the Convection-Dispersion equation, is applied to simulate the 2-dimensional water flow and nitrate transport to a subsurface drain. Measured hydraulic properties for 8 soil layers are used as input. The hydraulic conductivity at saturation is varied within the measured range to calibrate the model. Measured peaks in drain discharge rates and corresponding peaks in nitrate concentrations in the drainage water are simulated well. The layering of the soil profile determines the water flow patters to the drain, and explains the rapid nitrate transport from the topsoil to the drain.
