Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Since before 1967 producers, entrepreneurs, engineers, processors, and manufacturers have been attempting to mechanize the harvest of Capsicum peppers. This bibliography contains references pertaining to unpublished and published reports, popular press and a few newspaper articles describing worldwide attempts at mechanizing pepper harvesting, including pepper harvester patents and patents for other crops that may have potential as concepts for detachment. Also, included are related horticultural subjects: breeding, plant spacing, density, architecture, clustering/branching habit, fruit orientation, maturation, and ease of detachment; economic production analyses; and a limited number of mechanical harvest aids and varieties for mechanical harvest. It has been compiled as an aid to ensure that the worldwide research is known and made available to all scientists endeavoring to accomplish harvest mechanization.
