Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Since 1945 engineers, scientists, producers, processors, and manufacturers have been working on new and improved ways for mechanization of the harvest of pickling cucumbers, Cucumis sativus L. This bibliography contains references pertaining to unpublished and published reports, patents, and popular press articles describing once-over harvesters, multiple-pick harvesters, and multiple-pick, multi-person harvest aid designs and principles, and harvester efficiency, effects of handling on quality of greenstock and brinestock, and applied research efforts to increase yield and quality of mechanically harvested pickling cucumbers. Also included are related horticultural subjects: plant spacing, architecture, and varieties; and physical properties subjects: detachment forces, non- destructive quality evaluation, puncture resistance, and impact strength, etc. It has been compiled as an informative and historical aid for engineers, manufacturers, horticulturists, plant breeders, processors, and historians, etc. to ensure that the worldwide research be known and available to all scientists endeavoring to accomplish harvest mechanization.
