Using this modified soybean oil in ink, paint and coating applications will reduce the volatile organic content of these formulations. Technical Abstract: Soybean oil was metathesized using the standard homogenous metathesis catalyst consisting of tungstenhexachloride (WCl6) and tetramethyltin (Me4Sn) in chlorobenzene as solvent. The reactions were terminated at different time intervals. Soybean oil was mixed with metathesized soybean oil in the presence of cobalt-drier to evaluate drying properties. The minimum reaction time for the metathesis reaction, and the optimum amount of metathesized soybean oil in the mixture is reported. |
