Technical Abstract: The ARS Microbial Germplasm Resource homepage provides general information regarding the ARS Culture Collection (NRRL Culture Collection) and the Microbial Properties Research unit throught the electronic medium of the World Wide Web. The main topics covered are: (1) history of the ARS Culture Collection, (2) details of how microbial strains are preserved in the ARS Culture Collection, (3) strain accession and distribution policies for the public collection, (4) description of the ARS Patent Culture Collection, including procedures and policies for accessioning and distributing microbial strains deposited for patent purposes, (5) information regarding the scientific staff and the specific collections which they curate, with electronic mail hot links provided to each curator, (6) searchable catalogs for the publicly available strains in the various collections. Downloadable forms in multiple common word processor format are provided for deposit of strains in the public collection and for deposit under Budapest Treaty in the patent collection. This homepage provides scientists and the general public throughout the world with easy access to information regarding the ARS Culture Collection and provides the first public access catalogs to the available holdings of this internationally regarded collection in a more efficient and timely format than hard-copy published catalogs.
