Publication Type: Proceedings Publication Acceptance Date: 12/1/1995 Publication Date: N/A Citation: N/A Interpretive Summary: Breeding and genetics for both European plums (mostly grown in cooler regions) and Japanese-type plums (mostly grown in California and other warm climates) are reviewed. In recent years, interest in plums has increased as better quality varieties have become available. Active and historical breeding efforts are described, and new varieties are catalogued, with emphasis on those with potential for use in Italy. Paper will be translated into Italian for publication. Technical Abstract: Plum breeding and genetics worldwide are summarized for both European plums (hexaploids) and Japanese-type plums (diploids). Active breeding programs are described and new cultivars catalogued. Breeding for disease resistance is emphasized, such as for sharka, a serious viral disease widespread in Europe. The limited amount of plum genetics information available restricts current breeding efforts. |
